How Do Robot Mowers Affect Turf Management?

Robotic mowing is becoming increasingly common on golf courses. Superintendents, owners and turf professionals are asking a practical question: how do robot mowers change turf management compared with conventional reel and rotary equipment?

There is still much to learn about how robotic mowers can influence turfgrass quality, weed and disease pressure, course conditions and the overall golfer experience. Frequency of cut, clipping return, traffic patterns and the ability to mow during windows that heavy equipment cannot always use all affect the agronomic result.

On cool-season fairways and rough typical of Canada and much of the northern United States, consistent light mowing can support density and uniformity. That does not replace fertility, irrigation, aeration or pest programs. It changes how those programs interact with the canopy.
