Turn a Traditional Golf Mower Into a Robot.
Foxbridge Golf & Country Club is looking for a Robotics Mechanical Engineer to help us develop the next generation of autonomous robotic mowing equipment for golf courses.
This is not a traditional engineering position.
You will have access to a real golf course, real turf, real operating conditions and real commercial turf-maintenance equipment.
Foxbridge wants to take conventional turf-maintenance machines and explore how they can be transformed into autonomous robotic mowing systems designed specifically for golf courses.
The Opportunity
Golf-course mowing is traditionally performed using operator-driven machines.
We want to change that.
Foxbridge is exploring the integration of:
  • Robotics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Electric drive systems
  • Sensors
  • GPS / GNSS / RTK positioning
  • Autonomous navigation
  • Computer vision
  • Obstacle detection
  • Remote monitoring
  • AI and automation
  • Turf-management technology
Our objective is to develop robotic systems capable of operating safely and accurately on golf-course terrain.
The engineer joining this project will help determine how an existing commercial turf machine can be redesigned, modified or rebuilt into an autonomous platform.
What You Will Be Working On
You will work directly with existing turf-maintenance equipment and develop the mechanical systems required to convert conventional machines into robotic platforms.
Your work may include:
Mechanical Design
  • Design mechanical modifications required for autonomous operation.
  • Develop steering, braking, drive and actuator mechanisms.
  • Design mounting systems for sensors, cameras, GPS/RTK equipment and computers.
  • Develop mechanical interfaces between existing mower components and robotic control systems.
  • Analyze structural loads, vibration, stability and durability.
  • Design protective housings and components for outdoor operation.
  • Develop prototypes and iterate designs based on field testing.
Robotics Integration
Work with electrical and software engineers to integrate:
  • Motors and actuators
  • Steering systems
  • Drive-by-wire systems
  • Sensors
  • GPS/GNSS/RTK
  • Cameras
  • LiDAR or other sensing technologies
  • Emergency-stop systems
  • Obstacle detection systems
  • Autonomous navigation systems
Real-World Testing
One of the unique advantages of this position is that the testing environment is right here at Foxbridge.
You will be able to:
  • Test prototypes on actual turf.
  • Evaluate performance on fairways and other turf areas.
  • Test operation on slopes and changing terrain.
  • Evaluate traction and wheel performance.
  • Study turf interaction.
  • Test mowing patterns.
  • Identify mechanical failures and design improvements.
  • Continuously modify and improve the machine.
This is a build → test → learn → redesign → test again environment.
From Conventional Mower to Autonomous Robot
The project begins with machines similar to the conventional reel-type turf equipment already used in golf-course maintenance.
The engineering challenge is to determine:
How do we transform this machine into a reliable autonomous platform?
That could involve developing completely new systems for:
Steering → Drive → Braking → Cutting → Navigation → Sensing → Safety → Communication → Remote Control
The successful candidate will help architect and build these systems.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is comfortable moving between CAD, engineering theory, fabrication and a real machine in the field.
Required / Desired Experience
  • Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics or related engineering background.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems.
  • Strong CAD skills such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Siemens NX or similar.
  • Understanding of mechanical design, mechanisms, actuators and motion systems.
  • Experience with prototyping and fabrication.
  • Ability to work with motors, gearboxes, bearings, linkages and mechanical assemblies.
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and mechanical systems.
  • Strong problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work hands-on with machinery.
  • Willingness to test prototypes in real-world outdoor conditions.
Valuable Additional Experience
Experience with any of the following would be an advantage:
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Mobile robotics
  • Agricultural robotics
  • Turf equipment
  • Electric vehicles
  • Drive-by-wire systems
  • GNSS / RTK
  • LiDAR
  • Computer vision
  • ROS / ROS2
  • Robotics simulation
  • Embedded systems
  • Battery-powered equipment
  • Motor control
  • Hydraulic-to-electric conversion
  • CNC machining
  • Welding
  • 3D printing
  • Rapid prototyping
You do not need to have experience in every area.
We are particularly interested in engineers who can build, experiment and solve problems, not just design on a computer.
The Ideal Candidate
You may be a good fit if you are the type of engineer who looks at an existing machine and thinks:
“I know how I could make this autonomous.”
You enjoy taking something apart, understanding how it works, redesigning it and building something better.
You are comfortable working with your hands as well as CAD software.
You don't want to spend your entire career designing components that never leave a computer screen.
You want to build something that actually moves.
Why Foxbridge?
Most robotics engineers work in laboratories, manufacturing facilities or technology companies.
Foxbridge offers something different.
We have the golf course.
We have the machines.
We have the turf.
We have the real-world operating environment.
And we have a problem that needs to be solved.
Foxbridge's existing robotics initiative specifically positions the golf course as a real-world environment where engineers can test and refine autonomous mowing technology rather than developing purely in a laboratory environment.
Build Robotics in Canada
Foxbridge believes there is an opportunity to develop autonomous turf-management technology in Ontario for the Canadian and North American golf market.
The goal is not simply to automate one mower.
The long-term opportunity is to explore the development of a complete autonomous turf-management platform that could potentially be adapted for:
  • Golf courses
  • Sports fields
  • Municipal turf
  • Parks
  • Large commercial properties
  • Other professional turf-management applications
This Is a Founding-Team Opportunity
This position is intended for someone who wants to help shape the technology from the beginning.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to:
Concept → Mechanical Design → Prototype → Integration → Field Testing → Product Development
You will work alongside professionals from different disciplines as the project develops, potentially including:
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Robotics Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers
  • Software Developers
  • AI / Computer Vision Specialists
  • Automation Engineers
  • Turf Professionals
  • Golf Course Management Professionals
Foxbridge is already seeking multidisciplinary talent for its broader autonomous-mower initiative.
What You Will Build
We don't want you to simply maintain existing equipment.
We want you to help reinvent it.
Imagine arriving at Foxbridge in the morning, opening the maintenance building and seeing a fleet of conventional turf machines.
Your job is to help turn them into:
Autonomous Golf-Course Robots.
Machines that can:
  • Navigate the course
  • Follow predefined mowing patterns
  • Maintain consistent mowing paths
  • Detect obstacles
  • Stop when necessary
  • Resume operation
  • Communicate their status
  • Be monitored remotely
  • Work alongside golf-course staff
Modern autonomous golf equipment demonstrates that these capabilities are technically achievable; for example, Toro's current systems use mapping, autonomous mowing patterns, obstacle detection and remote monitoring.
Foxbridge's opportunity is to develop its own approach — starting with the machines and real-world environment already available at the golf course.
